Durham Region Health Department has issued a measles exposure notice for people who were in the Lakeridge Health Ajax-Pickering Emergency Department waiting room on November 3 between 10:40 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The public facility is at 580 Harwood Avenue South in Ajax. The Health Department asks people who may have been exposed during that window to watch for symptoms until November 24. The notice identifies a past exposure window; it does not announce a hospital closure.

What the Health Department advises

The department says it is investigating a confirmed measles case and contacting known contacts directly. No patient is identified in this report.

Its notice advises potentially exposed people to check their measles vaccination protection with their health-care provider if they are unsure. It lists fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, sensitivity to light and a red rash among possible symptoms.

If symptoms develop, the department advises staying home from work or school and calling ahead before visiting a clinic or primary-care provider, explaining the possible measles exposure. It also advises wearing a well-fitting mask when getting a medical assessment.

People without a health-care provider can call Durham Health Connection Line at 905-668-2020 or 1-800-841-2729. Consult the complete official notice and Durham’s measles information for current guidance and individual questions.
