About Clarington

The Municipality of Clarington is Durham Region’s eastern gateway, with a population of approximately 105,000. Formed in 1974 as the Town of Newcastle and renamed Clarington in 1993, it encompasses the urban centres of Bowmanville, Courtice, and Newcastle Village, along with the hamlet of Orono and significant rural areas. Clarington is divided into four wards. Wards 1 and 2 share one Regional Councillor, and Wards 3 and 4 share another. The council has 7 members: the Mayor, 2 Regional Councillors, and 4 Local Councillors. Clarington is experiencing rapid growth, with major residential developments in Bowmanville and Courtice. The municipality is the eastern terminus of the planned Highway 407 extension and is served by GO Transit bus service with future rail expansion planned.
