Oshawa Fire Services is using Fire Prevention Week to highlight safer charging practices for phones, e-bikes, scooters, power tools and other products that use lithium-ion batteries.

The official campaign runs October 4 to 10, with community activities beginning October 3.

Charging and battery-disposal guidance

  • Use the cord supplied with the product or a replacement approved by the manufacturer.
  • Look for a recognized safety certification mark when buying battery-powered products.
  • Charge devices on a hard surface and unplug them when fully charged.
  • When possible, charge e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside and keep exits clear.
  • Do not place lithium-ion batteries in household garbage or regular recycling; use an appropriate battery-recycling location.

Community events

Oshawa Fire Services plans interactive displays, demonstrations, fire-truck tours and education on charging, smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, and home escape planning:

  • October 3, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Community Safety Day at Fire Hall 5.
  • October 4: Oshawa Generals game beginning at 6:05 p.m.
  • October 8 to 10, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.: Oshawa Centre, Centre Court.

Residents should consult the City’s notice before attending in case event details change.
