Durham Regional Chair John Henry has proclaimed October as Circular Economy Month on behalf of the Region’s Works Committee.

The observance promotes keeping materials in use through reuse, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing and repurposing before recycling or disposal.

Five weekly themes

  • October 1 to 4: Understanding Circularity.
  • October 5 to 11: Protecting the Planet.
  • October 12 to 18: Building Economic Resilience.
  • October 19 to 25: Waste Reduction Week.
  • October 26 to 31: Strengthening Communities.

The campaign highlights construction and demolition materials, textiles, electronics and critical minerals, packaging, and food as priority material streams.

Regional programs and resources

The Region says its waste programs are guided by five principles: rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Its 2022–2040 long-term waste-management plan focuses on reducing waste, improving resource recovery and identifying opportunities to produce energy from waste.

Durham also participates in the Circular Innovation Council’s Share, Reuse, Repair Hub, which directs residents to local opportunities to swap, resell, donate and repair goods.
