The Durham Catholic District School Board says 115 secondary students attended its second annual Student Human Rights Conference at the Pope Francis Centre on October 15.

The board reported that the event’s theme was “Human Rights in Motion: From Awareness to Action.” Sessions addressed discrimination, protected grounds under Ontario’s Human Rights Code, protection from retaliation and allyship.

Students worked through advocacy case studies

DCDSB says participants reviewed case studies and discussed how students can respond when racism or discrimination occurs. The activities asked students to consider ways to stop harmful incidents, support healing and advocate effectively within their schools.

At the end of the conference, students discussed possible next steps with classmates, including changes they want to see, partners they could work with and commitments related to human rights and equity.
