Durham Region has proclaimed October 2026 as Circular Economy Month, highlighting ways residents, businesses and governments can keep products and materials in use longer through reuse, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing and repurposing.
The proclamation was made by Regional Chair and CEO John Henry on behalf of Durham Region’s Works Committee. The Region says the month expands on Waste Reduction Week and connects public education about waste reduction with resource recovery and local reuse initiatives.
Five weekly themes
- October 1 to 4: understanding circularity and why it matters.
- October 5 to 11: environmental benefits, including reducing waste and emissions and conserving resources.
- October 12 to 18: economic resilience through innovation, savings, jobs and stronger supply chains.
- October 19 to 25: Waste Reduction Week.
- October 26 to 31: strengthening communities through reuse, repair and sharing.
Durham waste-reduction programs
The Region says its waste programs are guided by five actions: rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Those principles also support Durham’s 2022–2040 Long-term Waste Management Plan.
Durham has also joined the Circular Innovation Council’s Share, Reuse, Repair Hub, which helps residents find options to swap, resell, donate and repair everyday products.
