The Region of Durham is encouraging families to plan safe routes to school and consider walking, cycling or other active transportation where appropriate as the new school year begins.
Practice the route
The Region recommends that parents and caregivers help children learn safe travel habits by practising routes, discussing road safety and building confidence before children travel independently. Active travel can also help students work toward recommended daily physical-activity levels.
Helmets and e-scooters
The notice highlights increasing injuries involving bicycles and e-scooters in Canada. Riders are urged to wear a properly fitted helmet, follow local bylaws, use approved routes and remain alert. The Region points to guidance from injury-prevention organization Parachute Canada that children under 16 should not ride e-scooters.
Rules can differ by municipality and route. Families should confirm local bylaws and school policies before a child uses a bicycle, scooter or e-scooter for the school trip.
