Whitby will formally open the Fieldgate Sports Complex on Saturday, September 12, with a free public celebration, tours and recreation activities.

Opening-day schedule

The official ceremony and ribbon cutting are scheduled for 9:30 to 10 a.m. Free family activities and drop-in programs will follow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Town says Olympic figure skater Elvis Stojko will be among the special guests.

Visitors will be able to try skating, swimming, badminton, pickleball, basketball, dance and fitness activities. Tours will highlight the building’s design, accessibility and sustainability. Outdoor courts, fields and play spaces will be available for a preview while final work continues.

A major recreation project

The roughly 15,200-square-metre facility includes a twin-pad arena, aquatics centre, double gymnasium, walking track and community program space. A 13-acre outdoor park adds courts, Whitby’s first artificial-turf field, a skatepark, pump track and playground.

Construction began in September 2023. In the Town’s release, Mayor Elizabeth Roy said resident and local-sport-organization feedback helped shape the facility. Chief Administrative Officer Matt Gaskell described the opening as a milestone involving staff, project partners and the community.
