Durham Region has announced three related road-safety projects in Pickering: new traffic signals at Brock Road and Usman Road, protected left-turn signals at Brock Road and Taunton Road, and a pedestrian crossover at Major Oaks Road and Wildwood Crescent.

Construction is underway on all three. The Region expects the installations to be operating by the end of 2026 but has not announced exact activation dates.

New controlled intersection at Brock and Usman

Traffic signals are being installed at Brock Road, also known as Regional Road 1, and Usman Road. The Region says construction will continue until December and the controlled intersection is intended to improve safety for motorists and people crossing the road.

Protected turns at Brock and Taunton

At Brock Road and Taunton Road, the Region is modifying signals to provide fully protected left turns in every direction. A dedicated green arrow allows left-turning drivers to move while opposing traffic is stopped, separating movements that can otherwise conflict.

Pedestrian crossover at Major Oaks and Wildwood

The Region and City of Pickering are also adding a pedestrian crossover at Major Oaks Road and Wildwood Crescent. Drivers and cyclists must stop and yield the full width of the roadway to pedestrians at a crossover, must not pass another vehicle there, and must wait until pedestrians have completely cleared the road.

The announcements are part of Durham Vision Zero. Drivers should follow the signs and signals actually in place while construction continues; the year-end targets do not mean the installations are already active.
