The Durham Agricultural Advisory Committee held its 24th annual farm tour at West Port Dairy on September 17, focusing on how family-run farms are adopting technology and planning for the future.
According to the Region of Durham, more than 120 participants saw the farm’s robotic dairy barn, learned about calf-raising practices and heard discussions about succession planning and the use of social media to connect producers with consumers.
A regional agriculture briefing
The tour is organized as an educational event about farming and rural issues. The Region says the advisory committee provides advice on agricultural and rural matters and has showcased more than 40 farms and agricultural facilities since the first tour in 2003.
The release also describes agriculture as a major part of Durham’s economy and rural landscape. Its figures put the region at about 1,200 farms covering 264,518 acres, with more than $350 million contributed to Ontario farm production.
John Henry said the tour gives participants a direct look at the resilience and innovation behind family farming. Zac Cohoon thanked the host farm for sharing its approach to modern dairy operations and succession planning.
