Pickering’s shared e-scooter pilot is entering the final weeks of its 2026 operating season. The City says Bird rental scooters are expected to remain available through the end of October, depending on weather.
The program returned April 1 after launching in 2025. Bird Canada owns, operates and maintains the shared fleet at no cost to the City. Pickering says staff will use operating data and public feedback to inform future decisions about shared e-scooter options and rules.
Hours, speed limits and permitted roads
Shared scooters normally operate from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., with new trips disabled remotely at 10:45 p.m. The vehicles are capped at 20 kilometres per hour and at 15 km/h in designated slow zones.
City rules permit e-scooters on roads with speed limits of 60 km/h or less, unless a dedicated bicycle lane is available. They are not permitted on sidewalks, multi-use paths, parks or trails. Riders must be at least 16, and riders younger than 18 must wear a helmet.
Shared scooters must be parked upright in a location identified in the Bird app or in a marked parking area. They may not block sidewalks, driveways, transit access or other public routes.
Public feedback will inform future decisions
Pickering’s Transportation and Traffic Services and Municipal Law Enforcement teams are monitoring the pilot with Bird Canada. The City directs residents to Durham Regional Police for collisions and sidewalk riding, and to Bird for improperly parked shared scooters or equipment issues.
