The Town of Whitby is urging eligible residents to make a voting plan for the October 26 municipal election, pointing to low turnout in the previous local vote.
Whitby says 23.26 per cent of eligible electors voted in the 2022 municipal election. Province-wide, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario reports average turnout of 32.9 per cent among 385 municipalities that held direct elections and supplied turnout data in 2022.
Voting options in Whitby
Voting Day is Monday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Whitby says electors can cast a ballot at any of 19 voting locations in the town.
Advance voting is scheduled for October 22 through 25, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Brooklin Community Centre and Library, Whitby Town Hall and the Abilities Centre.
The Town’s election hub links to its Plan Your Vote tool, where electors can check or correct their voters’ list information, review voting locations, see the candidate list and build a voting plan.
What the turnout figures show
AMO’s post-election analysis says average Ontario municipal turnout fell from 38.3 per cent in 2018 to 32.9 per cent in 2022. The Whitby notice also cites a longer decline from 44.4 per cent in 2010.
