Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy says work is continuing with the province, Lakeridge Health and its partners to transfer the provincially controlled land identified for a future Durham hospital in north Whitby.

In her October newsletter, Roy also said Lakeridge Health has submitted capital-planning grant applications that remain under review by Ontario’s Ministry of Health. The update does not announce that the transfer is complete, that the applications have been approved, or that construction has started.

What the mayor’s update says

The identified 50-acre site is south of Highway 407, west of Highway 412, east of Lake Ridge Road and north of Winchester Road. Roy said the property is currently under the control of the Ministry of Transportation.

Roy described the province’s August 2024 planning-grant announcement as an important milestone, while noting that several steps are still required before construction can begin. She said she has discussed the project with Ontario’s ministers of transportation and health, Whitby MPP Lorne Coe and Lakeridge Health leadership.

What remains unresolved

  • The official update does not provide a completion date for the land transfer.
  • It does not state when the Ministry of Health will finish reviewing the capital-planning applications.
  • It does not provide a construction start date or hospital opening date.

The newsletter is an update and advocacy statement from the mayor. DurhamPoliticians.com is not treating it as a new funding approval or construction commitment.
