Whitby Fire and Emergency Services will mark 175 years of service with a public open house at Fire Headquarters on Saturday, October 17. The event is part of Doors Open Whitby and runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Town says visitors can tour the station and fire trucks, meet fire-service members, watch demonstrations and learn about local firefighting history. Opening remarks from the mayor and local dignitaries are scheduled for 10:15 a.m.
Demonstrations and activities
- Fire tower demonstrations are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- A live-fire learning demonstration using thermal imaging is scheduled for 1 p.m.
- A vehicle-extrication demonstration using the jaws of life is scheduled for 2 p.m.
- Other activities include a firefighter obstacle course, extinguisher instruction, a hose target, historical displays and family activities.
Memorial preview
The open house will include the first public look at a rendering of Whitby’s Fallen Firefighter Memorial, created by Canadian sculptor Ruth Abernethy. The Town says the memorial is planned for unveiling in 2027 and will honour Whitby firefighters who died in the line of duty.
Access and parking
The event takes place at Whitby Fire Headquarters, 111 McKinney Drive. Because the headquarters remains an active station, the Town asks visitors to park at the Whitby Operations Centre, 333 McKinney Drive, and enter the formal ceremony through the rear bay door.
