A federal artificial intelligence funding intake is open to eligible businesses and organizations in southern Ontario, with potential relevance for Durham’s business and innovation community. FedDev Ontario is accepting applications to the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative (RAII) through January 19, 2027, at 4:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Two dates applicants should distinguish
The intake opened October 13, 2026. Although the overall closing date is in January, the official guidance says to apply by November 24, 2026, if the proposed project and eligible costs start before March 31, 2027. Applicants should check the official application guidance before setting a project timetable.
What the federal initiative is intended to do
FedDev Ontario identifies three areas of support: helping businesses and organizations adopt and integrate AI; helping Canadian AI companies commercialize and scale products and services; and strengthening the organizations and networks that support AI adoption and commercialization.
The program page offers separate routes for businesses and organizations. Eligibility, the suitability of a proposal and any funding decision depend on the applicable program requirements—not simply on an applicant’s Durham address.
What the funding announcement does—and does not—mean locally
The official page says an additional $500 million over five years, announced as part of Canada’s AI for All strategy, brings total federal funding for RAII to $700 million. That figure describes the national initiative. It is not a Durham Region funding allocation, a municipal budget commitment or confirmation that a local project has been approved.
For residents following economic-development policy, the distinction matters: opening an application intake creates an opportunity to seek support, but does not establish which organizations will receive it or what projects will proceed.
Where to check the requirements
Prospective applicants should use FedDev Ontario’s official RAII page to select the appropriate application route, review requirements and confirm dates. This article does not assess any individual applicant’s eligibility.
