Oshawa Fire Services is reminding residents celebrating Diwali that the City’s permit-free window for consumer fireworks runs from dusk until 11 p.m. on Sunday, November 8.

The reminder concerns Oshawa’s rules, not a region-wide permission or an announcement of a City-organized fireworks display.

Private property and safe distances

The City says consumer fireworks must be used on private property and in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements, including separation from buildings, trees and dry grass. Its standing fireworks guidance requires written authorization from the legal owner when the property is not your own.

Public parks, school yards and other public spaces are not locations for residents to set off consumer fireworks. The permit-free exception does not extend the Diwali window to surrounding days.

Plan for safety and neighbours

Fire Services recommends putting a responsible adult in charge, keeping water nearby, maintaining a safe upwind viewing distance and lighting only one firework at a time on the ground. Do not hold fireworks or attempt to relight a dud. Follow the City’s disposal guidance and the product instructions.

The reminder also asks residents to tell neighbours about their plans, consider pets that may be frightened by the noise, and clean up safely. Candles and oil lamps should be kept away from flammable materials and extinguished before leaving the room or going to bed.
