The Town of Ajax is inviting residents to gather at Rotary Park on Wednesday evening to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on September 30. The Town says the gathering will honour Survivors, remember children who did not return home from residential schools and encourage reflection on the ongoing work of reconciliation.
Bridge naming and commemorative sign
During the event, Ajax will ceremonially mark the naming of Zhaagawaamikong Aazhokigan and unveil a commemorative sign featuring original artwork by Anishinaabe artist Sharifah Marsden, who is from the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
The Town says the name recognizes the longstanding and continuing presence of Indigenous Peoples and their relationships with the lands, waters and air of the area.
