About Scugog
The Township of Scugog is a predominantly rural and lakeside municipality in northern Durham Region, with a population of approximately 22,000. The township includes the community of Port Perry (the largest urban centre), as well as the villages of Blackstock, Caesarea, and Nestleton, plus parts of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. Scugog is divided into five wards, each electing one councillor. The council has 7 members: the Mayor (who also serves as Regional Councillor), and 5 Ward Councillors. The Mayor has held strong mayor powers since May 2025. Lake Scugog, a large shallow lake, is the township’s defining geographic feature and a major draw for fishing, boating, and tourism. The township’s economy is driven by agriculture, tourism, and small businesses centred in Port Perry’s charming downtown.
