About Oshawa

Oshawa is Durham Region’s largest city and its administrative centre, with a population of approximately 175,000. Located on the Lake Ontario shoreline roughly 60 km east of downtown Toronto, Oshawa has evolved from its industrial roots as the home of General Motors Canada into a diversified city with a growing downtown, major educational institutions (Ontario Tech University, Durham College), and a thriving health sciences sector.

As the regional seat, Oshawa hosts Durham Regional Council chambers and many regional government offices. The city is divided into five wards, with the largest council in Durham Region: 11 members including the Mayor, 5 Regional Councillors, and 5 City Councillors (one per ward). Oshawa is well-served by transit including the Oshawa GO Station (terminus of the Lakeshore East line), Durham Region Transit, and Highway 401. The city is also home to the Oshawa Executive Airport and the Canadian Automotive Museum.
